SPOILER ALERT! The Adams Family is an allegory. The fact that they do weird crazy actions and nothing bad happens to them is only to suggest A GAP between what normal people would consider a good-down-to-earth-everyday-existence and a totally upside-down kind of way of life. They are not "normal" from the view point of contemporary civilization. Still, The Adams Family isn't merely a comedy to be enjoyed if you are some twisted sort of fellah. No. It stands as an object lesson pointing to the moral and ethical values of modern society. We often find ourselves judging others that have different opinions, different cultural background, different skin-color, different religious orientation etc. We find those that do not share our views and lifestyle - as offensive. We sometimes squirm and fidget devising means by which such people may be punished, fined, "exiled" or even killed, if we could. The dictate of the majority has so often been pressed upon people - that we need not remind the literal witch-hunts, or Hitler's concentration camps. The values we hold dear and distinguish us from the past centuries are: freedom of speech, freedom of a personal opinion, rights for the minorities, the right to own a property and the agreement to be able to disagree; these values are more numerous and are all touched upon in The Adams Family. They are different. They may be obnoxious, they may go over the line sometimes, they may seem to defy our values. But IT'S THEIR WAY and I already hear some saying: "Let them go some place else then!" Where? The allegory leaves no room for interpretation: there will always be those who live differently, talk differently, think differently and may even seem a menace to us all. As long as other people are not harmed in any way by them, they should be left alone. Live and let live. Communism was an example of what the "standardizing" can do. We should always wisely keep an open door to change in mentality, understanding different cultures and views; we are limited in experience. If we choose to live by social, religious or cultural dogma, people will, again, be burned at stake as in The Middle Ages. Evil is not he who is different than the rest, but he who is so arrogant as to assume he was given the mission to "correct the heretics." From my view point, The Adams Family was always the symbol for "The Adam's Family", even ourselves: mistaken, embracing theories and ways of life for all the wrong reasons, loving what we shouldn't, doing what we ought not - but still kindling a warm affection for each other in spite of all our misconduct and misled lives. To those who have a keen eye, the members of The Adams Family are good people, fun people, better people - better than the "normal" people that hate and rob them of all they possess. It will not harm us to seek warm, loving hearts under the rough, even unbecoming behavior of our fellowmen. After all, we are all members of The Adam's Family. The only difference is whether in our chest beats a heart or dwells a rock. |

All right, this is only for those who have seen the movie. But be warned, if you read this, you’ll catch on. My writing about “Shuttle” came firstly as a reaction to an IMDB post from someone who signed himself/herself: PurpleFanatic: “I have NO PITY when the victims are THIS DUMB!”
Unfortunately, this IS how it goes in the real world. The naïve who remains a naïve is lost. Life is tough. One must learn fast both from one's mistakes and the others’. Such is the situation with this movie. Once you know the person is a homicidal maniac, you not only take action, but DEADLY action. You don't talk with someone who's kidnapping, maiming and keeping you at gunpoint. Once you KNOW it's either you or him, there's no debating on “what should we do”. OK: the shuttle crashed. You are the only one up. YET. WHY THE HELL RUN? Take the gun or anything else, kill the "inglorious basterd", see if your friend is alive, help her and then... drive! Look, I'm a humanitarian, but there must be a point where I am entitled to draw the line! You can't reason with the devil! You can't talk sense into the skull of someone who's chopping off your fingers, cutting you with a knife, and running your friends over with a car! Nor should you say: "Awwwwwww, heeeeee's huuuuuurt noooow, we have such a kind heart! Can we keep'm, mommmy, pleease, pleaaase?" It just makes me sick.
And one more thing. I don't agree with those who make disheartening, demoralizing movies. The producer might say: "I made this movie to show the woman's condition as a slave." And you think we got the point and all rise as one in defending the women BECAUSE of your movie. A compassionate man doesn't need a movie like this. An insensitive man will yawn. A stupid man will say: "Oh, that was a reaaaallly great thriller!!!" So why should we see a disheartening movie before going to bed? WHY DO THEY make disposable-one-time-only-movies? A good movie can repeatedly be seen – as Keats said: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever…” You see "The Lord of the Rings" again and again. Why? Because humanity fights even against all odds and WINS! You see "The Day after Tomorrow" over and over again. Why? It's grim, it's sad... YES! BUT IT'S ALSO HOW WE PEOPLE ARE: We NEVER give up! We start over. We see "THE POSTMAN", where a lunatic is trying to break the human spirit in all mankind. Why? Because we like to organize, to take arms against those who will have us divided and frightened. Then we see "INDEPENDENCE DAY" over and over again, where human race is nearly obliterated. Why? Because we like the idea that "where there's a will, there's a way." Yes, people die by the millions. Yes, women and children, bless their hearts, are raped and/or killed. But we don't want to only know that we've got "issues". It's inhumane. Imagine a movie about a rape – just the rape, nothing else. ONLY SICK BASTARDS THAT LOST THEIR HUMANITY LIKE IT! We, true human beings, do not accept to be told JUST the story of our misfortune – we also want to know there is hope. We, true human beings, do not accept to be shown JUST how frail we are – we also want our enemy to know we’re solid-rock-determined, and, as the U.S President’s line was in the above quoted movie, INDEPENDENCE DAY, “we will NOT go quietly into the dark!” We, true human beings, do not accept to be told JUST about our death – we also want to know that there is a God of love and life after death.
